Real is Beautiful, Opening the Kimono Part 1

I’m still riding the positive energy from the huge success of this weekend’s “Opening the Kimono!”  Twenty photographers went behind the scenes to watch me shoot live in NYC. They got a backstage pass to watch me work with a real client, collaborate with my team, how I use the space in my fav studio to create variety, and how I create flattering authentic pictures with no retouching! We had an extensive Q&A and discussed why it’s important to me to no longer retouch the women in my pictures. (More on that below…)

This set was shot in 10 minutes and evokes the scorching heat of summer on the Italian coast in the 60′s – tanning oil, sun worship, and sexiness. If you’ve ever been to Italy in August you know what I mean.

As I’ve mentioned on the blog and announced in a Q&A last week, I will continue to not retouch the women in my photos and share them on this blog.

This woman (not a model) is unretouched in all of these photos.

Because real is beautiful.

Inspired by recent bad ass and brave beauty renegades, such as…

Taryn Brumfitt, who began a campaign to unite women across the globe to love their bodies,
Brooke Birmingham, who refused to put on a shirt for SHAPE magazine,
Seventeen magazine’s “Body Peace Treaty” which includes not changing girls’ bodies or face,
and Aerie lingerie company who began advertising their own pics that hadn’t been retouched,
among others…

…I was inspired to share my own.

Continue the movement. If you feel moved to, share this link via Facebook, pin the above image, tweet it, talk about it, call your mom.

Because real is beautiful.

xoxo, Christa

Spotlight on Liz Dialto & Wild Soul Movement

Meet Liz DiAlto, founder of Wild Soul Movement.

Liz is one of my favorite people on the planet and a dear friend. You’ve gotta know her if you don’t already. Her outrageous laugh, deliciously inappropriate statements, and heart-centered full-gusto approach to life make me want to put her in my pocket…

christa_meola_photographer_photography_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_010

The first time I met Liz was for a 22-woman photo shoot I did for Marie Forleo and her mastermind ladies. Liz went way outside her comfort zone and posed for a picture wearing nothing but her hands over her heart. Which is so her. (Liz wrote beautifully about the experience in a popular post on The Daily Love.)

Our second shoot was for her now-discontinued Tighter in Ten fitness program, which was about working out, building muscle and weight loss. She was a personal fitness trainer and wanted to look cut in that shoot. You can take a peek at that photo shoot in my archives.

And not too long after that photo shoot she began a dramatic transformation…

In the two years since then, she’s let go of wanting abs of steel and softened her body and embraced her natural curves. She also softened her heart and approached her body with acceptance, trust and love. She embraced her feminine energy and let go of the masculine “work out”…

christa_meola_photographer_photography_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_90christa_meola_photography_photographer_boudoir_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_99

She began practicing sensual movement, inviting more pleasure into her life, doing what felt good, and meditating…

christa_meola_photographer_photography_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_6

She practiced accepting her body and lovin’ on it…

In fact, there is NO PHOTOSHOP on these photos. She and I were in full-hearted agreement on that…

christa_meola_photographer_photography_boudoir_nudes_new_york_workshop_liz_dialto_0001christa_meola_photographer_photography_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_77christa_meola_photographer_photography_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_08

So when I met up with Liz recently in Los Angeles for our third photo shoot for her new Wild Soul Movement program – I had never seen her so vital, alive, and absolutely shining with positivity, love and joy. Not to mention the confidence and body love she had was totally alluring and positively magnetic!

I’ll have whatever she’s having please. Well lucky for us, we can…

christa_meola_photographer_photography_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_01christa_meola_photographer_photography_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_012christa_meola_photographer_photography_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_02christa_meola_photographer_photography_nude_new_york_liz_dialto_013christa_meola_photographer_photography_boudoir_nude_new_york_liz_dialto-09

Liz didn’t diet. But rather, she spent the last couple of years going inward to find complete acceptance of herself as she is and pouring all she’s learned into developing this new program for women. Wild Soul Movement is a 12-week video-based practice that combines soul-soothing movement, mantra and meditation…

Liz created it for women who want to feel confident, turned on, magnetic, worthy, and free.

As photographers who specialize in portraits for women, we want the same for our clients.

As women, we want the same for ourselves.

Join me and our special guest, Liz DiAlto, for a no-holds barred discussion…

“Body-Love and Self-Acceptance”
TOMORROW, Thursday June 5th at 1pm Eastern

Get the call-in details here.

She and I will discuss how we can help our clients and ourselves feel comfortable in our bodies and release what’s holding us back, and more…

See you on the call tomorrow!

With lots of body love,

Christa

ps. I’m also super excited to chat with Liz about the decision to go No Photoshop! with this shoot and the new policy my company has regarding retouching. So join us on the call tomorrow –  you don’t want to miss this!

It’s 45 minutes and PACKED with no-holds-barred info, so I didn’t want you to miss it.

The show’s gracious host, Frederick, said it was one of the most educational interviews he’s ever done. Gosh, what a compliment.

We discussed how I got started photographing women, my entire process, making women feel comfortable, how I work with my assistant, pricing, gear, what I do at the sales session, what’s next for us in 2014, and so much more…

So grab a cup of coffee, and I hope you enjoy!

2013, A Year in Instagram iPhone Pics

Whew! It’s a few hours til midnight on 12/31/13, and I just finished my favorite year-end exercise of listing all the magic moments of the year!

2013 was packed with amazing moments and full of shoots, speaking, travel, girlfriends, family, so much fun and a ton of unexpected gifts… including the biggest one of all: Costaki and I got married!

So before heading out to ring in 2014 on this chilly NYC evening, I thought I’d share some of these favorite 2013 moments with you via Instagram, mostly captured with my iphone (except where noted).

Pictured above:

christa_meola_photography_photographer_003

I hope you take some time to look back on 2013, have a glass of wine, sit back and let your mind wander (you can use the help of photographs or a calendar to jog your memory), and write down all of the magic moments, no matter how big or small.

You’ll be surprised at all that you’ve packed into 365 days… all of the wonderful little everyday moments that take your breath away and create the texture of a beautiful and precious life.

Sending lots of love,

Christa

ps. Join me on Instagram for a peek into my life… mostly iphone photos, silly moments, fun and inspiration! Now let’s take all that positivity that memories (and photographs!) evoke into the new year and have an amazing 2014!

The online workshop covered everything it was supposed to.
Mardoqueo Harrington Williston, ND

I knew even in week one that it was going to be worth the money. I am more confident in my choices and skills especially with posing and lighting. It’s like taking several college courses in just 6 weeks! But with such practical application it’s unreal.
Shea Mayberry, Dana Point, CA

Recommended. I’m more confident. More at ease. More professional about business aspects. More comfortable behind the camera.

Elissa Wood Johnson City, TN

Christa’s workshop is one of the best formats I’ve seen for online training (of any kind). I definitely recommend it. Christa gives more than just recommendations and what works for her business; she gives guidelines on how to start a boudoir business from the bottom up. Thank you for the hard work that went into this workshop. It was phenomenal, immensely educational and enjoyable.
Danny Stumvoll, Austin, TX

Well worth the price. I’ve increased bookings, plus my approach, style and quality have all seen enormous improvement.
Kimla Holk Tow, Tow TX

Christa has taken my business to the next level with shooting better, editing, and the relationship I have with my clients. Christa Meola is well organized, detailed, and all about taking care of business. I would tell everyone to take the course.
Traci Reid,  Peachtree City, GA

I’m not a Boudoir photographer but STILL learned so much. The branding, marketing, lighting, posing … ALL of it is important. Wonderful class with so much information. Christa Meola tackles all of it and is right there from the start helping guide you. Great great workshop for anyone, no matter where you are in your business.
Deborah Chetwood Austin, TX

My shooting has tremendously improved. I don’t feel lost anymore.
Emily Fisk Simi Valley, CA

I highly recommend Christa’s workshop!! I hesitated at first and was extremely nervous because this was a very BIG step, and I’m so happy I did it! Christa shares AWESOME information!
Tammy Sawyer Pewaukee, WI

Denise Beck Houston, TX

Absolutely recommend!
Kirsten Mumford, Colorado

Very comprehensive.
Cyndy Porter  McLean, VA

I highly recommend it.

Christa brought complex material to a layman’s level that I could relate to. And that I was able to apply immediately.
Dr.William Shideler Valparaiso, Indiana

A NYC Story in Replichrome

Renee, a sweet southern woman who came to NYC for a shoot, told me her best tip on feeling gorgeous is to have new adventures! I agree. Exploring is fun, being brave is gorgeous, and experimenting is vital in order to grow.

Having never posed nude before, Renee wanted her NYC story to have a little love, daring, and curiosity to explore…

Note to photographers: For this set, I road-tested new presets from TRA called Replichrome. I’m sharing a variety of their presets with you so you can see some of the looks available with these that I’m liking.

This is Renee’s NYC story, in Replichrome…

Spotlight on: Justine Musk… and a snake!

An email came in recently requesting a photo shoot with this subject line: daring, sensual, badass photos.

It was from Justine Musk. I met Justine a few years ago at Marie Forleo’s Mastermind in LA, as part of a 22-women boudoir party photo shoot. I was immediately struck by Justine’s intensity. I spent only a few minutes photographing her, but when she looked into my camera, her eyes conveyed an intellect, strength and beauty that is apparent in her writing.

With articles like How to Go Beyond Happiness, 25 Badass Ways to Say NO, The Art of Thinking Highly of Yourself, and 18 Principles for Highly Creative Living” – it’s easy to see why her blog is so popular.

It’s such a pleasure to feature our LA photo shoot here!

Please meet Justine Musk… and Angelo.

Christa_Meola_New_York_Photographer_002

Here’s what Justine said about why she hired our team, and why she wanted to shoot with a snake!

“I love Christa’s work — how she celebrates the beauty and sensuality of everyday women. I discovered that, before Eve, before patriarchy, the snake was a symbol of wisdom, healing, renewal, initiation and secret knowledge; of cosmic feminine energy; of female sexuality as sacred…

Christa_Meola_New_York_Photographer_003

Christa_Meola_New_York_Photographer_004

…I got it into my head that I wanted to play with that kind of imagery, to celebrate the 40-year-old skin that I’m in, in the face of a culture that would shame me for not being young and perfect (or perfectly covered up)…

Christa_Meola_New_York_Photographer_005

…So to me, there’s a spirit of defiance and rebellion about the photos, but also a joy…and the joy comes from the kind of atmosphere that Christa was able to create.  Christa loves women in a way that makes it easier for us to love ourselves.  (Also, the snake was really cool.  His name is Angelo.)”

Christa_Meola_New_York_Photographer_006

Tons of gratitude to Justine, for a phenomenal shoot, being a totally sensual badass, and allowing her pics to be featured here. I’ll travel to LA to photograph you anytime!

Special thanks to makeup artist extraordinaire Rachel Olsen and her camera-loving pet snake, Angelo.

Lots of love,

Christa

ps. Coming up: more from Justine’s shoot, a cool lighting tutorial, and exciting news!

One Hot Mama… Sexy at Sixty-one!

In honor of Mother’s Day coming up on the 12th, I’m thrilled to be featuring… my mom!

My mom, Sandina, was my first symbol of femininity and sensuality. I remember, as a little girl, sitting on my parents’ bed in my soccer uniform, watching fascinated as my mom artfully put on make-up and got dressed up to go out for the evening. Curious why she chose one pair of stockings over another. Putting on heels, sexy slacks (it was the 70′s), a partly sheer top or revealing neckline… to me, it was all so risque´!

Well now many years later, she and I recently celebrated her 61st birthday with a photo shoot. And this time, I helped her choose which outfits, pampered her with a professional make-up and hair stylist, and captured her the way I see her… playful, elegant, hysterical, sassy… beautiful.

My mom also makes the perfect subject for the 2nd installation of our new blog series focusing on having a healthy relationship with your body, being comfortable in your own skin, and enjoying your body and life. So I took this opportunity to interview her to share her inspiration:

Christa: Describe your body in 5 words.
Sandina: Curvy, strong, comfortable, mature, balanced.

How do you feel about your body?
I look in the mirror and start to see the wear and aging starting to set in, and it is frightening! Most days, I feel good about my body, especially when I’m on track with exercising, and I’m wearing the perfect outfit.  When I start to get down about my body, I do something to make me feel better about myself, such as go for a massage, facial, a spa day, and last but by no means the least, shop for that killer outfit.

What do you love about your body?
It’s unique, mine, and one of a kind. There really is not one specific part that I love and always want to show off.  If I have to pick because you’re making me (Christa: Yes, I am), I would say my ass.  It still has a pretty good shape.  And my breasts – I know many women would kill for full breasts – I was lucky and was born with them.

How did you feel about being half-naked in front of the camera?
Well, at first I felt shy and stupid, trying to be model-like, but then I started to open up and get into the zone. Then it was fun and felt glamorous.

How did you feel after seeing the photos we created?
Pretty, sexy and wonderful. When I’m looking at them, I see the playful side of myself again.  And I think: hey, I look pretty damn good, especially for my age.

What’s your go-to item to wear to feel smoking hot?
Silk.

What’s your best tip for feeling gorgeous?
Pamper yourself in every way. (Christa: Really? You do this?)  Absolutely, even if it’s just a quick massage, pedicure, hair color change, or new haircut. It works for me.

How do you feel about your age?
Love it and not afraid to show it.

You used to never want people to know your age. Can I mention on the blog that you’re 61?
Honestly, I used to be that way when I was 50! But now, I have finally accepted my age. So you’re right – I’ve changed. And yes, I welcome you to show my age.

Do you feel like your age affects how sexy you truly are?
Not at all!

What gets better with age?
Confidence. Accepting who you are. I also think you begin to look at your body differently. I know when I was younger, before being married, I hated my body and tried so hard to be pretty and look good like everyone else.  But now, I accept myself and am okay with the way I look. I have a certain body type that will never, never be skinny, and now with age, I get it!! I no longer worry about pleasing others or how I compare. I’m my own person, and I’m happy.

What’s the best compliment you ever received?
“You’re how old?!”  Just kidding. Any compliment I get from my children is good. The compliment I hear the most is from my girl friends. They say I have nice skin. It’s so nice to hear that. I can be so critical of myself sometimes. So hearing these positive compliments keeps me thinking, “It’s not so bad that I’m getting older.”

And without further ado, here are a few pics from our photo shoot…
My mama loves her hats!

Thanks Mom! I feel very fortunate to have a fabulous role model for loving life, having a sense of humor about yourself, and enjoying what it is to be a woman.

Lots of love and inspiration to every woman, and Happy Mother’s Day to every mama out there in advance!

xoxo, Christa

A Curvy Conversation

Welcome to a new blog series that focuses on having a healthy relationship with your body, being comfortable in your own skin, and enjoying your body and life.

Exactly the way they are.

I’d love for you to join me and begin to shift away from a place of criticism, doubt, and dislike to a place of positive focus, celebration and excitement.

I’m thrilled to kick off this body-and-life-lovin’ with Katherine Roll, a beautiful curvaceous woman and model that I photographed recently, who had never done a boudoir photography shoot before.

During our shoot, Katherine was so confident and comfortable with her body, that afterwards I interviewed her to share the inspiration!

CHRISTA: Describe your body in 5 words…
KATHERINE: Beautiful, classic, feminine, hourglass, voluptuous

How do you feel about your body?
My body and I have been through a lot together. I have been a size 10, a size 20, and every size in between. I feel that there are parts that I can work on in order to make it a healthier body, such as working out regularly, sticking to a healthy diet, and steering clear of bad habits. I feel that my body has boosted my career in ways that I never would have expected. Being a size 18 plus-size model, I have had obstacles along the way, but have grown to appreciate, maintain, and love my curves.

What do you love about your body?
I love being able to inspire women to be comfortable in their own skin, no matter what shape or size they may be. I believe that my curves are powerful and can change people’s perception of the plus-sized woman and standard plus-size model. I believe I carry my size-18 self well. I dress appropriately and because I believe in myself, I exude confidence in every direction.

christa_meola_nude_boudoir_photography_workshop_new_york_photographer_000

How did you feel about being naked in front of the camera? (Those pics not shown here.)
As you know, I had never done an implied nude shoot before, and was surprisingly comfortable being nude in front of the camera. You and your team made me feel comfortable, beautiful and at ease, and you gave me great direction to get the perfect shots.

How did you feel after seeing the photos we created?
I feel that they are sexy, sensual, and beautiful, without being provocative, inappropriate or too revealing. I love the way you captured the light so perfectly. I had never had a boudoir shoot before, and loved seeing my body in a sexy flattering way.

What’s your go-to item to wear to feel smoking hot?
I personally love extremely high heels. High heels give the ultimate confidence boost. Once you find a great pair of high heels that are a perfect fit, you automatically stand up straighter, appear slimmer, and exude confidence.

christa_meola_nude_boudoir_photography_workshop_new_york_photographer_001

What’s your best tip for feeling gorgeous?
Knowing what fits. Feeling confident is one thing – but looking the part is another. Too often I see plus-sized women wearing clothing that is not the correct size for them – whether it be too large or too small. Trying on multiple sizes in the same dress or pants can show you what is truly comfortable and what looks the best. A great fitting bra can also give you the support you need to feel 10x better than you did before!

How do you feel about the term “plus-sized”?
I am content with being called ‘plus-sized.’ I find that the ‘plus’ or ‘+’ means ‘in addition to’ and therefore, simply defines my size as additional sexiness added to the straight sized woman.

What’s the best compliment you ever received?
The best compliment I have ever received came from a young girl. She has been following my career since day one, and told me how she was inspired by me to love her curves, accept her body at the size it is, and even pursue modeling. She often messages me with new exciting things happening in her career, and I love knowing that my body and confidence helped get her there.

Thank you, Katherine, for the honesty and inspiration!

(Don’t you just love her point of view on “plus-sized” meaning “additional sexiness!” Now THAT is positive focus.)

Stay tuned for more of Katherine, different body types, lots of inspiration, resources and body-loving on the blog.

Here’s to lovin’ up your bod and life even more today :)

xoxo, Christa
