Wildcat Nude Workshop, No. 2

Inspired by Light, Shadow, Line & Form… and as always the camaraderie of women.  This second installment of pics from the Wildcat Nude Photo Workshop led by Kim Weston and myself truly represents my feeling about natural light and shadow – I love both!  Equally.  I am also a huge fan of women, and the power of heartfelt contact, connection and friendship.

Uptown and Downtown

This girl works both ends of that spectrum… one of the last shoots done at my studio, Kaylyn was a blast to photograph since she indulges my love of variety.  We started elegant and fashion-loving in the studio, then stepped outside for some gritty cinematic action, and ended up at the beach for some good clean commercial fun.

For Photographers: The film noir photos are all available light at dusk with just the outdoor lights of my building casting some seriously cool light/shadow against the brick and enhanced in Lightroom with the Graduated Filter tool (one of my favorite lighting tricks!)… I talk about how to do it in my new book Exposed, The Art of Photographing Women.  Official announcement and details coming soon 🙂  Plus, more fine art nudes from the Weston + Meola Wildcat Nude Workshop.

Stay tuned yo.

Wildcat, Nude Workshop with Weston and Meola

Left to Right: Photos by Ed Weston, Kim Weston, Christa Meola

I thought the experience on my birthday last year couldn’t be topped! Last August, I had the gift of photographing nudes with Kim Weston at Wildcat, the Weston family estate.  The Weston family’s contributions to fine art photography has been a longtime inspiration for me and has fueled my passion for art, photography, story-telling and the female figure.  So the entire weekend was deeply meaningful to me, and I blogged the pictures in Nudes No. 1, Nudes No. 2, Nudes No. 3, Nudes No. 4, and Nudes No. 5.  The spark ignited that weekend has grown as I continue to enjoy photographing nudes – my latest are posted here, the Viceroy Nudes.

But here’s the crazy exciting news… on August 27th, 28th, and 29th, Kim Weston and I will be co-leading a Nude Photography Workshop together!  At Wildcat.  My mission is to expose portrait photographers to the Weston legacy, fine art photography, and photographing the nude female form… as well as having a hell of a good time!  I’m telling you the Weston’s know how to host a workshop!  Photographing nudes all weekend on the Weston estate, steeped in history and tradition is a unique opportunity for any photographer.  Plus the fireside chats are not to be missed!  Needless to say, I’m so excited for this event and seats are going fast.  Limited to 12 photographers.  Register by contacting christa@christameola.com.

More Madison Madness

People get addicted to shooting with me what can I say :)))  Many of my boudoir women are on their second and third shoots, but none came back as quickly as Madison… who you’ll no doubt remember from last week’s Room Service boudoir sessions Part 1 and 2 at the Biltmore Hotel.  Those pictures brought my little ol’ blog here to record high traffic numbers… and it has stayed up :))  wink wink.

This time we hit the studio and the talented Mr. Jeff Siegel did a phenomenal job with make-up.

Ah, the fun you can have in a chair….

christa-meola-boudoir-photography-0081

These pics were more about Madison’s love of jewerly and being comfortable in her own skin, relaxed and happy and barely covered.  Whereas the Room Service pics were more hot hotel mistress and part fashion shoot…  Which ones do you prefer?  Anything else you’d like to see… Let me know!

Actually, you will be seeing more – this weekend I’ll be shooting some fine art nudes 🙂  stayed tuned!

One Hot Mama

boudoir_photography_christa_meola_pictures_0013

I used to hang out in my mom’s bedroom when I was a kid and watch as she finished getting ready to go out… putting on stockings, lipstick, asking me which shoes I liked best. She has always been a rare blend of feminine fashionista and masculine car-loving fix-anything-and-do-it-better-than-the-men kind of gal. And she has always been a beautiful, dare I say sensual, woman. Basically, I had the coolest mom on the block. So it didn’t surprise me that she was up for it when I suggested a photo shoot for her birthday.

That’s right, my mom did a boudoir photo shoot for her XXth birthday, and darn it – I am so proud of her and honored to have enough of a gift to capture this for her.

We planned a studio shoot with a few wardrobe changes (my mom brought eight thousand outfits, but we only had time for a few), and I called a few of her closest girlfriends to come to the studio after our shoot as a little surprise party, to share champagne and cupcakes and toast mi madre.

The shoot was hysterical and fun – laughing at ourselves is one thing my mom and I do often and do well together. When her girlfriends showed up, we popped a lot of corks, made fun of my non-existent baking skills, discussed men, got tipsy, just about peed our pants laughing, and began planning their upcoming downtown boudoir party… My mom’s friends are great girls – and one in particular is downright raunchy! So I look forward to that photo party soon!

Thank you ladies, for helping me celebrate my mom’s 43rd birthday and to honor the brilliant sexy wonderful fun-loving up-for-anything mom of mine. And mom, thank you for being you – the coolest mom on any block. PS. Thank you for those good genes!

In Like a Lioness

March definitely came in like a lion, with two shoots on Sunday that couldn’t be more different – a newborn and family session in the morning and a boudoir session in the afternoon. After photographing the loving and energetic Hubbard family at their home (see post tomorrow), I hurried over to my studio to meet Lisa for a bit of boudoir! She had arrived early (so eager, I love it) and was sitting in front of my studio with bags and bags of lingerie, cozy blankets, and a Gelson’s bagful of wine and cheese – my kind of girl! As we picked our favorite outfits, Lisa’s up-for-anything and faithful friend Christine showed up to join the fun and lend support… Christine turned out to be an amazing assistant and I want to hire her! All I had to say was cue the wind! and she was right there with the fan on Lisa’s hair. She even lotioned up Lisa’s legs – now that’s a good friend. My job was easy – Lisa is gorgeous with beautiful skin, stunning green eyes, fabulous hair and a playful spirit.

The next couple of hours were a frenzy of snacking, laughing, curling hair, chatting, bending, flirting and seducing… all the while, shooting… I had the best time! Lisa’s goal was to get beautiful and sexy photos for her boyfriend that captured her sweet and seductive sides… well congratulations Lisa, mission accomplished! Here are a few of the more modest shots – I was experimenting with a new lens (85mm 1.2), which I love and now wonder how I ever did without.

Look for the highlights from Sunday’s newborn shoot in tomorrow’s post as well as thoughts from my recent trip to Vegas for WPPI, and thank you for all the kind comments – keep ‘em coming and let me know what you think! 🙂

Get Ready for Valen-tease Day!

vdaytitle1

vday1a

Karen first contacted me with the idea of doing “sexy pictures” as a surprise wedding gift for her husband-to-be, all the while telling me it’s “so not” her and that her fiance would never expect this from her. Karen is a very talented writer with a wonderful sense of humor and a self-proclaimed shy plain Jane. I was fond of her immediately, and our scheming began!… We giggled like little girls and had secret phone calls about different types of high heels and thongs. We decided to incorporate her love of writing, her Chinese heritage, and her husband’s love of the Cubs all into the shoot. “Old Hollywood, Veronica Lake” was her inspiration.

Soon after, we hit the Biltmore Hotel in Downtown LA and let the sexy out! At first Karen was a bit nervous, but that quickly faded. A glass of wine later and after my silly antics, she was completely relaxed and we were having a blast!

My favorite part of the process is when a client sees her images for the first time, and Karen did not disappoint. She got real teary-eyed – the sign of a successful shoot in my book. Here’s part of an email Karen sent to me after she saw the pictures:

“…I cannot believe the confident, vibrant, beautiful, and dare I say, sexy, woman in the photographs is me. I honestly can’t remember a time when I felt so alive and exhilarated in my own skin. Thank you for these stunning photographs that I will treasure forever and for capturing a side of me I had no idea existed.

Oh, and my husband thanks you, too. A lot!”

I love that while in the process of creating something sexy and unexpected for her man, Karen gave herself the gift of a beautiful lasting record of who she is in this moment of time. And I want to thank them both for a memorable experience and for allowing the posting of a few of the more modest pics on my new blog.

Enjoy!

Karen’s shoot was so much fun – and she had the same “obstacles” as most women. So here you are, my little Valentine’s gift to the girls!

Ten Tips on How to Feel Relaxed & Sexy when being Photographed

1. Focus on Having Fun
Make your goal to have fun, not to get great shots – that’s my job 🙂 Everyone looks their best when they’re genuinely having a great time.

2. Visualize
I know this is very Tony Robbins of me, but he’s not the only one who recognizes the power of visualization. Make it a practice to see the experience of having a great time, feeling sexy, everything going smoothly, seeing the photos and loving them. Be specific and visualize from your point of view, as if you’re in it.

3. Get Inspired
Look at movies and art for inspiration, tear pages out of magazines and begin to recognize your style and sensibility… what is sexy to you? This will help you communicate with your photographer and help guide the shoot.

4. Show Up With All You’ve Got
When I say show up, I don’t mean to just show up. Bring it. And be open. Karen deserves all the credit for the success of her shoot, because she showed up, really stretched way outside her comfort zone and gave it all she had.

5. Be Sensual
Use your five senses during the shoot: play music, have a bite of chocolate, a sip of wine, put on a favorite scent, wear a kick-ass outfit you feel great in, and think of memories that make you blush, smile, and sweat… Do everything and (well, almost) anything that gets you hot.

6. Be Silly
Any shyness tends to go right out the window after the first few minutes or so of being silly. I am the biggest ham during a shoot, and I embarrass myself frequently (not always on purpose), but this serves me well as it usually puts everyone at ease. Just goof off and have fun! See how outrageous and silly you can be – it’s easier for the photographer to tone you down, rather than fire you up!

7. Create Movement
I often hear but I don’t know how to pose. Well that’s good, let’s not do that! Create a little action, however, so there’s energy in every shot. C’mon you all know how to flirt! If you’re on a shoot with me, I can show you some sexy moves (hey hey).

8. Remember the Context
The sheer fact that you’re in front of the camera being photographed is damn sexy… it’s powerful and vulnerable at the same time, which is an unbeatable combo – enjoy it!

9. Fake It
I’m not telling you to fake the real deal, but if you don’t feel 100% confident and sexy while on a photo shoot, FAKE it. Works every time.

10. Be Yourself
Honor who you are, in this moment. Don’t wait to lose a few pounds. (Besides, I’m a pro at retouching, and Photoshop is the best personal trainer in the world – more on that in another post!) But it’s important that you FEEL sexy, so if working out for a few weeks is going to do that, then great. But let’s not wait for all the planets to be aligned and your bangs to be the right length. The time is now. You are sexy and beautiful just as you are.

Bonus Tip: And of course, add alcohol 🙂
